Research Aids
- Search Engines. These mechanisms search through all files on the World Wide Web or through their own catalogs of Web sites. You might add your favorites to your browser's bookmark list.
- Searchdesk. Facts, plus newspapers and news.
- AltaVista. Operated with Digital Equipment's "big iron," probably the most powerful of the comprehensive engines.
- Infoseek Guide. Rated highly by Internet World magazine, as was Alta Vista.
- Inktomi Web Services. Another powerful engine.
- LookSmart. Despite blinking banners, its categories are good, particularly Issues & Politics, and its search engine pulls up excellent articles.
- Yahoo!. Best known of the engines that use catalogued profiles of Webs rather than free-text searching of all files.
- WebCrawler. Granddaddy of search engines and still one of the best for government and politics.
- Publications. Indexes and individual publications that have especially good coverage of policy issues.
- Ultimate Collection of News Links. Links to thousands of newspaper Webs all over the world.
- CQ Gopher. Selected political analyses from Congressional Quarterly issues. Full CQ is on American Online (Keyword: CQ).
- Congressional Quarterly "Sound Off". Not really a publication but rather forums of people expressing opinions about current issues.
- The New York Times. Has own search engine and free subscription to online service -- free so far.
